Deborah Kelly Header

Deborah Kelly: No Human Being Is Illegal (In All Our Glory)

Originally created for the 19th Biennale of Sydney (2014) this exhibition comprises 20 life-sized photographic portraits realised through ongoing discussion, exchange and art making between the artist, the subjects and the contributors.

The subjects represent a fascinating cross section of contemporary Australia with each portrait telling an intimate story of the subject’s life. Kelly creates mixed media artworks that are at once unexpected, humorous, provocative, and profound.

Jud-Wimhurst-Header

Jud Wimhurst: Protection

As a firm believer in DIY, research and experimentation is an important part of Wimhurst’s practice and if that means sourcing a completely new material and exploring its capabilities or mastering a new technique, or even to make the
necessary tools to do a specific job from scratch, so be it.

Conceptually, his sculptures are inspired by consumerism, design, pop culture, mortality and humour - and in particular the point of which these themes may meet or intersect.

Peter Lissiotis Header

Peter Lyssiotis: Where are the originals? Once were photographs...

Where are the Originals? slows down the frantic pace of photography in the modern era, pausing for a breath in our rush to capture every moment by taking an over-the-shoulder look at photography and interrogating it.

Amongst other things this exhibition posits the view that once an idea has been stretched, almost to breaking point, it will return inevitably to the original.

Mackay Owl Arts Project: Kris Martin

Mackay is the only region in the world where the Powerful Owl and the Rufous Owl both exist.

In an effort to highlight and celebrate these wonderful species a collaborative arts project will culminate in a giant owl head installation to feature at Happy Dayz Festival and at DBCT Illuminate during the Mackay Mazda Festival of Arts in July 2017.

Local artist Donna Maree Robinson will do ‘Mandala Arts’ with Calen State District College younger year students and then will later collate and project their works onto the eyes of the large owls head. Sunshine Coast based natural fibre artist, Kris Martin, will work with the older year students at Calen College and volunteers to create a 2.4m diameter owl head from split bamboo, recycled copper wire, piccabeen palm fallen leaf, cat’s claw weed vine and lycra for projections.

This project is supported by Mackay Regional Council and ‘Green Arts’ RADF funding.
