First timers handy hints
If you are attending a performance / event at The MECC for the first time, here are some handy hints to help you.
How do I book tickets?
Tickets can be booked by one of three ways, in person at the Box Office, calling the Box Office on 07 4961 9777 between 9am to 4.30pm Monday to Friday and 10am to 1pm Saturday, online at www.themecc.com.au.
How do I make sure I am buying tickets safely online?
We strongly advise you always purchase tickets to any event through the official seller, which for MECC events is www.themecc.com.au.
We also strongly advise reading through and following the Live Performance Australia Safe Tix Guide and the Guide to Buying and Selling online in the Ticket re-sale market.
Where should I park?
The centre has two designated car parks, one that can be accessed via Alfred Street and the other via Macalister Street. Ample street parking is also available in nearby streets. Centre patrons must be aware that on street parking includes a mix of restricted and non-restricted parking.
Please check sign conditions for the duration of your stay. There are two designated disabled parking zones are provided in each of the designated car parks. Additional disabled parking is also available on surrounding streets. Parking compounds are also available within five and ten minute walks to the centre entrance.
What time should I arrive?
The doors to the foyer open 60 minutes prior to the commencement of a performance.
Pre-ordered Food or Drink?
If you have pre-ordered or wish to purchase refreshments from the MECC Café and Bar, it is advised to arrive 60 minutes prior to the show start time, as food and drink cannot be brought into the auditorium.
Just coming along to the show?
Otherwise, it is advisable to arrive at least 30 minutes before the start time, especially if you are collecting tickets from the Box Office.
Listen carefully to the announcements that are made prior to the show. It will include information that will assist with making your experience at the theatre more enjoyable.
Some shows may have a lock out (this is a period of time the performers stipulate for the doors to remain closed once the show has begun), so please keep that in mind.
What should I wear?
Usually, smart casual dress is perfect - more formal than you would wear to a barbecue, but less than you would wear to a wedding. Because our theatre and plenary halls are air conditioned, you may want to bring a light wrap or jacket.
Can I take pictures or videos?
Photos and video are not allowed in the theatre, so no taking pictures of the performance or snapping quick theatre ‘selfies’ before the show, except in the foyer.
Make sure your mobile phone is off. Please don’t just set it to vibrate, the screen lighting up at any point during the show may impede other audience members’ view or distract the performers.
What refreshment / pre-dining options are available?
The MECC Café and Bar open 60 minutes prior to the performance and at interval.
Antipasto Platters are available to be pre-ordered to pick up and enjoy pre-show or at interval (be sure to ring ahead and check the performance has an interval if you are not sure).
The MECC Café menu options do vary between different events, however generally there is a selection of hot food, sandwiches, salads and sweets. For an example menu, click here.
Food is not permitted in the theatre.
Audience members may bring drinks purchased in the venue into the theatre. Drinks that are brought into the theatre must be in MECC plastic cups. To avoid the queue at interval, drinks can be pre ordered and paid for at the bar before the show and collected from a table in front of the foyer stage.
What happens if I arrive late?
If you do arrive late – be aware that some shows have a ‘lockout’ period. This is a period of time the Promoter/Artists stipulate that the door is not allowed to be opened once the show has begun. If you are late, you must wait for the ‘lockout’ to end before you can be guided to your seat.
How will I know where to sit?
Your ticket will tell you the row, the seat number and the door through which to enter. Go to the door printed on your ticket, have you ticket checked / scanned by our door attendants, as you make your way inside ushers will direct you to your row.
General Admission events do not have allocated seating; therefore seating is available on a ‘first in, best dressed’ basis.
