Mackay chosen for inspiring arts documentary

MACKAY is one of two locations in Queensland selected for a documentary created to inspire performing arts centres across the country.

Queensland’s centre of contemporary touring knowledge, ArTour, will be in Mackay this week producing a video case study while indigenous dance sensations, Djuki Mala, visit Mackay as part of their Queensland tour.

Djuki Mala will perform at the MECC and run workshops this week for one hundred local primary and high school students. The workshops have been funded by local funding programs Pathways to Performance and the Regional Arts Services Network (RASN).

Students will learn a traditional and contemporary dance piece from this unique, contemporary dance company from Elcho Island, North East Arnhem Land (NT).
“The Djuki Mala dancers are excellent role models for youth in our region,’’ Cr Englert said.

“The workshops are the perfect opportunity for young people to get up close and personal, try some dance moves, have some fun behind the scenes, and get a taste for what a career in performing arts might be like.”

The ArTour documentary will film the workshops and the performance to communicate the impact, value and importance of performing arts in regional areas.
These case studies will be used to help ArTour provide insight and inspiration to other performing arts companies who may wish to tour Queensland.

Djuki Mala present a fusion of traditional Yolngu and contemporary pop culture, dance and storytelling with a hefty dose of heart and soul. It is a marvel of timing, comedy and clowning and offers a rare and insightful view into Aboriginal Australia.

MACKAY is one of two Queensland filming locations selected for a documentary to inspire performing arts centres across the country.

ArTour will be creating a video case study whilst Djuki Mala, one of Australia’s leading young indigenous dance performers, visit the MECC to perform and run a series of educational workshops for 100 local students.
